Internet (Digital) Marketing is Constantly Re-Creating Itself

Marketing on the internet in 2011 is a dynamic process: Interactive, Growth Stimulating, Producing Motion and Needing Regular Fresh Input. Many businesses still think of their website and internet presence in the terms of a 1970 telephone: plug it in, forget it and it works like a charm for the next 20 years.

4. AUTHORITY. Rightly or wrongly, website viewers equate a clean, modern and bright website with “They Know What They’re Doing”.
5. NAVIGATION. If users cannot find what they want on your site within 10-20 seconds – they are gone and they don’t come back.

‘I Want Change As Long As Nothing is Too Different!’

This is where Trusting Your Web Designer plays a large part. Before choosing a web designer for your makeover, ideally, there was a vetting process.

You got referrals, looked at the designers’ work and are satisfied the designer can deliver the Makeover Main Objectives: Be Found and Convert Searches to Sales.

And now, here’s the most difficult part of any makeover: You have to Listen to your web designer.

Almost inevitably, the design suggested will be radically different than the current under-performing website. If the current site and associated advertising were doing the job needed – would you really be looking at a makeover in the first place?

Gone in 5 Seconds: 2011 Critical Elements in a Website Build

You have 5 seconds for your website to make an Impression on potential clients/customers. If they don’t like what they see – they are gone and they don’t come back.

You do it yourself! When Searching – finding a website that has acceptable or even great info but has a dark and old-fashioned presentation – you surf on. Why? The business may have superior knowledge and use cutting edge technology, but their website is extremely dated.

Are you Willing to Make Changes?

•    Your current website colors are dark purple and black – and your web designer tactfully suggests that a lighter color palette will keep people on your website longer and encourage buying.
•    Navigation does not ‘flow’ – users have difficulty finding what they need.
•    Your current website photos appear to be unrelated to your main product.
•    Website photos are not high resolution and are ‘dark’ (without proper lighting).
•    Photos have not been professionally produced (or at least, created by a talented amateur photographer that knows about lighting, composition, etc).
•    Text content on current website is without SEO or marketing value.

Major Objections to Change

•    My Aunt Mary wrote the text content for the site. It took forever and she is really proud of her work.
•    My cousin Larry designed our current website. It’s not great – but it’s a website!
•    We spent a fortune to acquire our current website and I really like the colors/graphics.
•    Do we have to re-do everything? I know that nothing is working marketing-wise or for SEO on the site, but I’m really used to it.
•    We know that Aunt Mary knows nothing about SEO, marketing copywriting or internet presence – but we insist that she be allowed to write all the content for the new website.
•    Go ahead and design the new site – but we insist that you use all the colors, graphics and photos from the old site.

Bottom Line

Change IS Scary. But if you want a dynamic, high-performing, SEO and Marketing powerhouse website – then you have to be willing to Trust Your Chosen Web Designer. And, you have to be willing to Make Changes.

Just a day after Facebook was sent an open letter by security firm Sophos addressing privacy issues, new safety features have been introduced to protect teens from bullying and to protect the average user.

The Security Recommendations from Sophos:

1) PRIVACY BY DEFAULT

No more sharing of information without your users’ express agreement (OPT-IN). Whenever you add a new feature to share additional information about your users, you should not assume that they want this feature turned on.

2) VETTED APP DEVELOPERS

It is far too easy to become a developer on Facebook. With over one million app developers already registered on the Facebook platform, it is hardly surprising that your service is riddled with rogue applications and viral scams. Only vetted and approved third-party developers should be allowed to publish apps on your platform.

3) HTTPS FOR EVERYTHING

We welcome you recently introducing an HTTPS option, but you left it turned off by default. Worse, you only commit to provide a secure connection “whenever possible”. Facebook should enforce a secure connection all the time, by default. Without this protection, your users are at risk of losing personal information to hackers.

The real Personal Privacy issue is: All Facebook users were automatically ‘Opted-in’ to full internet sharing on Facebook Places – without really knowing or understanding the implications. And without being given an easy method to ‘unsubscribe’ to the service. It is obvious from Facebook’s choice of implementation for the Facebook Places service – that Facebook does not really want users to ‘opt-out’.

In the past few months, Facebook has sought to compete with Twitter by automatically opting-in all users in their Instant Personalization App ( “Lets you see relevant information about your friends the moment you arrive on select partner websites”) that has the unfortunate side-effect of also freely making available all user Status Updates for Google Search on the internet. To avoid having all your Facebook Status Updates shared throughout the internet, you have to Opt Out** of this Facebook feature. ( ‘Count Me Out!’ as a marketing gimmick?)

What ‘Xyz Company Evaluator’ is actually selling:
Recommended Merchant Ad that pops up during a Category Search only on that one Directory website.

This is not the same as owning your own company website! You get one page (at best) on an internet directory site.

You will not an entire website with a domain name that you own. [NOTE: All businesses get the same listing FREE on the vast majority of internet directory sites].

Having a Recommended Merchant Ad may be valuable to you – but it is not the same as having your own website. As a consumer, you need to know the difference. Caveat Emptor. Then you can make an informed choice regarding what gives the best ROI (return on investment) for your company. Small businesses usually do not have deep pockets for buying unlimited advertising. In fact, FREE is usually best!

1.  Each internet Free Directory listing that you list with – also has a Paid Advertising division. Once you create a free listing, the Paid Ads Dept will be calling you:)
2.  Xxx.com called a My Pandamonium™ client last week and offered him a Recommended Merchant Ad on xxx.com. The rate? ‘Only’ $800/month. And he was reassured by the high pressure salesperson that it’s a deal; since many companies pay up to $3000/mo for a similar listing!
3. Xxx.com is only one of literally hundreds of online directory sites offering free listings and paid Recommended Merchant ads. They all solicit to small business owners for paid ads. Some of these solicitors are high pressure and do not follow Best Practices regarding truth in advertising.
4. A Sample Regular Member Listing from the BBB website: Blue Ribbon AC, The Colony, TX. All BBB members have a listing just like this at no extra charge.

Key Point To Remember:

All ‘Recommended Merchant’ Ad solutions on directory sites have one main premise:
They all assume that someone is searching on their website for your business category.

In a Google Search, free online directory listings have the same Search ‘weight’ as a Premium listing on any directory site.

Also, it’s unclear how much SEO is received from paying big bucks for a Premium Recommended Merchant Ad.
Recent research indicates that paid ads on search engines and directory sites are rapidly losing effectiveness.

In the past quarter, SEO has suddenly become a Hot Topic.

Is it SEO or an SEO Scam?

Recently, many My Pandamonium™ clients and and a surprisingly number of small businesses in all industries are receiving marketing calls and emails for SEO and/or Internet Marketing Services.

These SEO Marketing calls and emails are Guaranteeing (?) Top Placement in all Google Searches. In one case with which I am familiar (because I took the call!) for the small sum of ‘only’ $100 per month, with $150 needed to start the service.

That’s $1200 PER YEAR! And what does the consumer get for the $100 per month? Five (yes – 5!) keywords. And this company (one of many currently telemarketing and email marketing, mostly the West Coast) absolutely guarantees a #1 Google Search placement by only adding 5 keywords to your site.

There are many companies now jumping on the SEO Marketing bandwagon.

Best Advice: BUYER BEWARE.

SEO And Internet Marketing Facts

NO ONE can ‘guarantee’ top placement in Google (or other Search Engine) Searches. Google does not sell placements and their formula (algorithm) for calculating Search Placements is a closely guarded secret. Google changes their algorithm every quarter to prevent ‘gaming’ and misuse of their Search Ranking system.

One increasingly common untruth about the Google Search Algorithm is being made by companies that claim they can ‘beat’ the Google system and/or Guarantee Top Search placement. This is simply – not true. There are no shortcuts or guarantees for Google and other Search Engine results – but there are SEO Best Practices.

I have been developing SEO websites for years, using SEO Best Practices and educating small business owners about SEO Best Practices. ~ No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.

Beware of SEOs that claim to guarantee rankings, allege a “special relationship” with Google, or advertise a “priority submit” to Google. There is no priority submit for Google. ~ Be wary of SEO firms and web consultants or agencies that send you email out of the blue.

Amazingly, we get these spam emails too:“Dear google.com, I visited your website and noticed that you are not listed in most of the major search engines and directories…”

~ Be careful if a company is secretive or won’t clearly explain what they intend to do.

Ask for explanations if something is unclear. If an SEO creates deceptive or misleading content on your behalf, such as doorway pages or “throwaway” domains, your site could be removed entirely from Google’s index. Ultimately, you are responsible for the actions of any companies you hire, so it’s best to be sure you know exactly how they intend to “help” you. If an SEO has FTP access to your server, they should be willing to explain all the changes they are making to your site.

SEO is a lot more than just keywords!
